Description: The Plainsville Borehole discharges directly to the Susquehanna River. The boreholes were drilled in 2001 by PA DEP BAMR to relieve pressure when the original discharge portal collapsed almost a 1.4 mile upstream. The boreholes were drilled near an abandoned top soil pit. The pit serves as a pond to oxidize and drop out iron sediments before entering the river. Although more could be done to optimize the "system" over half of the iron is retained.
