Description: This is one of two passive systems that were originally listed under the Falls Creek - Schrader Creek system (OSM ID 76). Costs could not be separated so they are covered under the Falls Creek project. Schrader Creek - AMD 08(3295)101.1 - Bradford County: Submitted by Schrader Creek Watershed Association. Construction was completed by Maude Mining in October, 1997. The project involved the construction of two vertical flow wetland systems to treat two deep mine discharges. An extensive aquatic survey of Schrader Creek was completed by BAMR employees and PAFBC in July, 1997, to document conditions just prior to treatment. This project is expected to return seven miles of Schrader Creek to a reproducing trout fishery comparable to upstream conditions. The first samples of treated water were collected in December, by the Watershed Association. The pH has gone from the 3 - 4 to 6+, acidity have gone from 100+ mg/l net acid to 90+ mg/l net alkaline, and already low iron levels have been reduced slightly to 1.5 mg/l and less. Elevated aluminum levels have dropped to below detection in the smaller system that has been operating since September. However, aluminum levels have only been reduced by half, to 6.8 mg/l in the larger system.
