Description: The Friedline passive system was constructed in 1997 to treat an underground coal mine discharge located on Powdermill property that has been reported to be a very small "country bank" mine. The system consisted of two SAPS, settling ponds, and wetlands. Reportedly major maintenance was conducted in 2001 which included replacing limestone, compost and piping in SAPS 1 & 2, along with an emergency spillway in SAPS1, and the installation of aluminum recovery system. In 2004, PA DEP BAMR constructed a steel slag bed which utilizes a stream intake to bring clean water from the stream into the bed to raise the pH and increase alkalinity. That water was then introduced into the settling pond that follows SAP2.
